Central/West Defeats Middlesex/Merrimack 7-2 to Win Major Championship

Written by: Jamie Callery - HNIB Staff

Central/West's Dominic Blad and Jackson Tucker scored 0:17 seconds apart, followed by a late 1st period goal from Mickey Foley to establish a solid lead before heading into the 2nd.  John Liquori remained solid in net for Central/West, only allowing 2 goals to Middlesex/Merrimack's Jake Rogers (13:31 into the 1st) and Danny Moynihan (6:34 into the 3rd).

Middlesex/Merrimack's leading goal-scorer, Brian Bowen, was held scoreless for the entire game.  Bowen scored 11-2-13 in the tournament, only 1 point behind the Scoring Champ - Metro's Brendan McDonough (5-9-14).  Central/West's scorers were not so quiet, however.  They piled on the goals with 3 more in the 2nd period from Brendan Ashe, Jackson Tucker, and Sean Deverin.

Trailing 5-1 with 5:00 minutes to go in the 2nd period, Middlesex/Merrimack pulled their goalie while on a power play thanks to a holding call on Central/West's Artie Potter.  Hopeful that a 6 on 4 advantage would get them back in the game, Middlesex/Merrimack gave up the puck and allowed a short-handed, empty net goal.  Proving to be a costly turnover, Middlesex/Merrimack went into the 3rd down by 5 goals.

With 0:28 seconds left on the clock, Central/West's DJ Petruzzelli (Sophomore at Springfield Cathedral) tallied the final goal of the 2012 Boys Major Championship game.  Central/West (coached by Brian Foley) defeated Middlesex/Merrimack (coached by Bill Flanagan) 7-2 to win the 38th Annual Boys Major Showcase.
